QUEEN OF THE SCREEN: ‘For Me Acting is a Natural Extension of Living’

cheapest viagraCLARION CHUKWURAHcheapest viagraDEA’S JANE MWANGIcheapest viagra

She must be used to the star-struck fans who hurriedly inch closer just to catch but a glimpse of her wherever she goes; but Clarion Chukwurah soaks in the attention with admirable grace and flair. When she walks in, her enchanting beauty and elegance all but stop time for a split second. And clearly, her off-screen appearance doesn’t disappoint at all.

We snuggle comfortably on the pristine black leather seat as she occasionally sips her glass of Amarula in-between our conversation. Her career is unrivalled as she commands respect and admiration for her many roles as a veteran Nigerian actress, director, producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist.

This multi-talented star confesses to having been mesmerised by acting at the tender age of five and from then on her lot with the camera, lights and action was cast. “When I was five I told my father I wanted to become an actress and from then henceforth I hip hopped straight from the family car to the cinema.” The year 1979 saw her adopt the role of Lady Macbeth in William Shakespeare’s cheapest viagra, marking her debut into the coveted world of glitz and glamour.

She became a semi-professional actress with the University of Ibadan Performing Company and also joined Tunji Oyelana’s band “The Kenneries” as a back-up vocal. She became a professional actress in 1984 with Lola Fani - Kayode’s soap opera “Mirror In the Sun”, “Eloped” ,“Boomerang”, “Ripples” in addition to a slew of over 150 films  such as true confession, Glamour girls 2, Ogidan among others. She did a three week refresher speech course in Leeds (North England) in 1997 sponsored by The West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds.

When I ask how this whole experience has been, she smiles and with a soft English accent she says, “By the early 90’s, I had become Nigeria’s queen of soaps having appeared in about 7 soap operas and by the time I did my first Nollywood movie I had already made a name for myself on both TV and the stage.” She has worked on location in Ghana, Cameroon, Benin, Uganda, South Africa, England, France, 12 states of Mexico and of course Nigeria; which adds to her wide acclaim and celebrity status.

While on the set, she’s in her element but some of her roles come with their fair share of challenges. “As an actress some of the challenges I have encountered are with the movie scripts depicting characters that existed in Nigeria’shistory, for instance when I played a Yoruba queen and as a priestess of a major river in the eastern part of Nigeria. The latter was a 110 year old character who was still alive and she couldn’t allow me to converse with her somethingthat would have helped me to better fit into the role.”

Then she muses that romantic roles are even worse because after the shoot, it is rather awkward not knowing how to relate to the male character that plays your love interest in the film because they expect some sort of formalities or friendship. “Nollywood movies tell the Nigerian story and try as much as possible to tell the African story in order to impact on the future of Africa.”

The amount of recognition Clarion has attained is phenomenal. In  2010, she was given the UN peace medal and appointed a United Nations International Special Peace Envoy for her work with children and young people on the platform of her charity organisation - the clarion Chukwurah (helpline) initiative. In 2007, she received the Nite Shift Recognition Awards and became the Vice President, Caya-Africa International [Children and Youth Assistance] Organisation (Cameroon). In 2006, she became the Patron – Actors Guild of Nigeria (Anambra State Chapter).

The same year saw her being bequeathed with the Chieftaincy Title – Ada Eji Eje Mba I of Anambra State. In 2005 – she received the Distinguished Alumnus Award; In 2003 - Afrohollywood Awards (In recognition for outstanding contribution to African films, arts and culture in the United Kingdom and Reel Awards (For the Best Actress in Yoruba) among other awards.

But Clarion is not resting on her laurels yet. Her upcoming project is a film with the theme, ‘Women in African Development’, which will be shot in Nairobi. “I intend to involve a lot of Kenyan talent; the working title is ‘Nairobi 2012’. I chose Nairobi because it is a peaceful city and a lot of the problems that the film is going to be addressing are prevalent in East Africa.”

The film, she says, has a Pan-African involvement with actors from Cameroon, Ghana, Tanzania and Kenya. “A couple of months back, PM Raila Odinga came to Nigeria and said that Nollywood movies are quite popular here and that we should find a way of involving Kenya.” So, is this her first visit to Kenya? “Yes, the last time I was on transit to Uganda and Tanzania. This visit was specifically to support the Nigerian Women’s Association in their breast cancer fundraising initiative.”

As an equally involved mother of 2 boys, her life in the limelight has not shifted her focus on what brings sunshine to her days. He first born son 29 year old Clarence is an accomplished movie director and cinematographer while 14 year old Brian is in boarding school. “Last night I was on the phone with my youngest son and he asked me to bring him a giraffe when I leave,” she laughs revealing a mother’s deep-seated affection.

So is it safe to say that she lives a charmed life, having attained super stardom, driving top of the range vehicles not one, two or even three for that matter like the Cherokee jeep and shopping in exclusive spots i.e. London’s Oxford Street? Yes, more so, she says, because of a simple philosophy, “It is not the length of life but the depth of life that makes all the difference.
