JICA, (the Japan International Cooperation Agency) established technical cooperation with the Rift Valley Provincial Hospital where medical doctors from our university provided specialised health services to the local patients, which lasted ten years.

In 1979, JICA initiated a long-term medical research cooperation with KEMRI in which Nagasaki University played a key role.  Through this cooperation the Government of Japan supported the construction of the initial KEMRI and supported the Institution with equipment and funding for different research programme.  Recently the Japanese Government supported the construction and equipping of the training center.

In 2005, the Institute of Tropical Medicine (NUITM), in an effort to strengthen the collaboration, established a research station in Kenya.  Through this initiative NUITM has established several modern equipped biomedical laboratories at the Centre for Microbiology as well as at the KEMRI headquarters.  Among research activities started since 2005 include: two demographic surveillance site (DSS) which provide platform for other researchers, in Mbita and Kwale, different mosquito vector studies aimed at the reduction of Malaria transmission in the Lake Victoria region, studies to understand the etiology of diarrhoea and to enhance the diagnostic capacity in different parts of the country and a study on geohelminth and other parasitic infections.

The situation of dental health here is totally different from those in Japan.  People in Kenya don’t eat so much sweet so they don’t have many cavities but if people start to eat more sweet, then maybe they will have more cavities.  They need more dental care and also dental health education.

Apart from dental science, fisheries department of Nagasaki University will join our scheme in the near future. They are going to start fishery science, in Lake Victoria or Indian Ocean.  Nowadays the number of fish is decreasing and also the size of fish is getting smaller and the water quality is deteriorating year by year in Lake Victoria.  So they will give us scientific information and will contribute to improving health status of local people if fish becomes a target of nutrition.
